Slate
For centuries, slate has been used in British construction as slate flooring, slate roofing and for constructing bedded slate walls making it a very popular material in old properties. Devon Stone is happy to supply high grade British slates such as Delabole from Cornwall, Kirkstone slate and Burlington volcanic slates from Cumbria and Welsh slate as well as a number of imported slate tiles and pavers.Slate is what geologists call a metamorphic rock, i.e. it has been changed within the earth’s crust by heat and/or pressure. This change is what causes the platey minerals to grow in one plane, so that the resulting slate is similar in constitution to the leaves of a book that have been tightly stuck together. It is this structure of slate that makes it so useful for splitting into sheets (known as cleavage). Slates such as Kirkstone slate and Burlington slate which are volcanic in their make up will often come in finishes that do not show cleavage and as such are often confused as other types of stone.
Devon Stone are able to offer slate and slate slabs in a number of finishes ranging from honed through to riven. Devon Stone are pleased to offer:
