Management

Devon Stone was founded by husband and wife team Jose Cortizo and Amy Cortizo.  The company is based on the core values of excellence in product, excellence in service and value for money.  Since its inception, Devon Stone has seen four major changes:

  • A shift from a wholesale only company to an architect, developers and end user driven organisation - we establish and develop long term relationships based on our core values.
  • Increased our stone offering to one of the most comprehensive in the UK.
  • Move from retail only to specialist supplier and installer (to include stone masonry and restoration) - we strongly believe in managing your project from start to finish.
  • A focus from a regional outlook to a national outlook.  Our installation capability now geographically covers Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, Kent and Hertfordshire and Jersey (size of project dependent).  We have always supplied nationally.

To achieve this shift, Devon Stone:

  • Opened a luxury showroom/meeting rooms in Exmouth Marina to support its existing warehouse and external yard in 2006.  The purpose of this is to bring together the largest possible selection of quality natural stone in a single comfortable and peaceful marina setting away from any high street.
  • Actively sought out and recruited the best in area stone mason, stone tilers and hard landscape teams.  We are proud that these same teams have continued to work at Devon Stone for over two years now with the loss of only a single team.
  • Actively sought out and worked with leading stone suppliers to increase our product offering - we consider our offering to be amongst the most comprehensive for quality natural stone in the UK and at the most competitive price to quality ratio.

We are now proud to say that we have worked on a number of the most prestigious domestic and commercial sites in the UK and continue to expand our architect, developer, end user and contractor client base.

BREAKING NEWS 1:  Devon Stone will open a luxury new showroom in Kingsbridge Devon serving the South Hams region of Devon.  The showroom which will show our full range of products will also offer our full design to installation service.  The Kingsbridge showroom will open in early 2008.

BREAKING NEWS 2:  Devon Stone signs partnership agreement with a Spanish and Portuguese luxury marble consortium.  Devon Stone's strategy for 2008 includes a move to excel in the supply and bespoke installation of luxury marbles.  The service which includes bespoke marble slab work from design to fully book matched installation in the world's finest marbles will be managed from the UK with cutting in Portugal.  Final installation will be carried out by our Portuguese and Spanish partners that are world class in this field.  Our agreement ensures  Devon Stone's position as a leading bespoke marble specialist drawing on the expertise of Europe's leading cutting and installation specialists whilst offering our clients European rather than British costs.

Amy Cortizo (Managing Director)

Formerly a marketing director for a major European company, Amy Cortizo spent a long time specialising in material product design.  Amy has brought with her the right commercial mix to ensure that Devon Stone products are the best in the market and that the end client is fully aware of the right context in which to apply them.  Amy Cortizo is also responsible for Devon Stone's outward image and is keen to ensure that the clean lines of it's image are followed in the work we carry out.

Jose Cortizo (Commercial Director)

Formerly a commercial project manager Jose Cortizo has experience of managing multi million pound programmes for clients ranging from BP to Pfizer.  Jose Cortizo left the project management arena to work for Stoneguard in South West England before setting up Devon Stone with his wife Amy Cortizo.  It is Jose's belief that the same principles apply to all projects and in the natural stone arena these should be:

  • Use the best people and materials for the job and get it right first time - the cost of a poor job outweighs the cost of a more expensive quality project.
  • Simplify the problem for the client and ensure good communication throughout - we don't all know about natural stone and associated materials and most people don't want to either - we all want it to look right.
  • Price should be based on a sensible commercial rate and not situation dependent.

Jose Cortizo is now regarded as an expert in the field of limestone and basalt specifically and is looking forward to developing Devon Stone's offering for luxury bespoke marble.  Jose Cortizo is responsible for all Group natural stone purchases as well as running our Devon installation service that covers Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.  Our team number 12 specialist stone installers and masons.
